Running Coyotes Have Early Success

The MHS boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have been in action officially since the Monday before school started, and unofficially since June. The team practices Monday-Friday, with most meets falling on Saturdays. All of this hard work has been paying off in the first few meets of the season. Isaac Green is so far undefeated in the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) competition and leads one of the best boys’ teams in school history. He repeated his title at the esteemed Liberty Bell Meet, winning in an incredible time of 15:16 for the 5k. Holly Bent leads a talented and deep group of ladies. She also had a fantastic performance at Liberty Bell, running 17:59 for the 5k. On the team front, both teams have either won or placed second at the three meets thus far in the season. The junior varsity teams have also performed well, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams and individuals winning the first two meets in a dominating fashion.

The cross country team is entering the middle of the season racing phase, in which every week has a meet. Both varsity teams are gearing up for an impressive state campaign, ending with the state meet down in Colorado Springs on Halloween. After state, the team will travel to Arizona for the Nike Southwest Regional Meet on November 20, to try and qualify for the Nike National Meet in Oregon in December.

The coyotes take on other Boulder Valley teams in the annual Pat Patten Invitational at Viele Lake on September 26, the day of homecoming. Come out and cheer on the cross country team before you dance the night away!
